Princess Maxima of the Netherlands opens Municipal Theatre Haarlem (NL)

23 September 2008

On September 26 the extended and renovated Municipal Theatre of Haarlem will officially be opened by Princess Máxima of the Netherlands. After a carefully executed renovation, the monumental building is set for the upcoming theatre season.

The monumental theatre building, fully rejuvenated, is revitalised in full splendour. Enriched with an enlarged flight tower, the theatre can host large ensembles in Haarlem again and meet all technical requirements of contemporary theatre buildings.

The most striking intervention to the monumental building is the new flight tower. Its façade composition consisting of brick, ceramic ornaments and glass panels connects the contemporary and historic elements of the building. Erick van Egeraat developed these ornaments in a unique cooperation with the well-known ceramic artist Babs Haenen. The ceramics are a clear reference to the porcelain in the old parts of the theatre done by Leon Senf.

The interior got fully renovated. The original interior design has initially been applied to only a few rooms. These monumental spaces, like the theatre hall and adjoining foyer spaces, are now restored to old splendour with contemporary comfort and individual character.

Build in 1918 by architect J.A.G. van der Steur, the theatre is one of the five oldest theatres of the Netherlands. The total gross floor area is 8.400 m2.
